The 8" rearend is a great candidate for an upgrade to your six-cylinder drivetrain. The main issue is the width. The housing is 1/2" wider than the stock 7.25" but the perches for the leaf springs are the same distance apart. I found a local race shop called Ron Piercy Racing that narrows housings and has the proper jigs and tools to do it right. This is probably not something the average shadetree mechanic would want to tackle. I had them take 3/8" off each side to make the housing 3/4" narrower overall. They charged $150 and after seeing the shop, the jigs they used and the other housings they had narrowed, I was confident they would do a great job. And they did. You can see the weld indicated above.
